Moreover, each functional movement, such as reaching, is embedded in a complex environment with particular postural, physical, or social constraints. Research has shown high variability during the first year of life in the frequency, duration, peak, and average velocity of reaching movements. Nevertheless, acquiring reaching ability is much more complex than just simply possessing the skill. Early on, the reaching instances rely primarily on the shoulder and elbow and are poorly executed however, the hand and wrist eventually become more involved in the movement. This age is essential in infants’ postural development as it is the time when head stabilization becomes a priority for the infant, reflected in the changes of direction specificity in postural control (i.e., primary activation of the dorsal muscles during forward movements). Finally, our findings demonstrate the utility of wearable motion trackers for precise measurement of infant movement dynamics.īefore the age of 4 months, infants make their first attempts at reaching, which is one of the motor abilities crucial for interaction with the environment. This may be caused by their distinct purposes in supporting postural stability and efficiency of movement execution. In contrast, the activity of the acting arm was followed by the activation of the legs. Importantly, on average, the non-acting arm preceded the activation of the acting arm. A series of Granger causality tests revealed that the activity differed depending on the non-acting limb and the type of the reaching movement. The analysis was conducted on the subsample of participants (n = 20), who performed at least four reaches during the task. To this end, we used wearable motion trackers to measure infant motor activity during a baby-gym task designed to capture overflow during reaching movements. The study aimed to investigate the motor activity across the non-acting limbs during goal-directed action. This is the first study quantifying motor overflow with high accuracy and precision provided by Inertial Motion Units. We present the results of a quantitative study exploring motor overflow in 4-month-old infants. This result tends to mimic real world performance, where I found the Moto G 2015 to last at least a day during my regular usage, which is something the 2014 model couldn't manage on a consistent basis.Early in life, infants exhibit motor overflow, which can be defined as the generation of involuntary movements accompanying purposeful actions. Performance is especially great in PCMark, where the new Moto G lasts a lot longer than the previous generation model. Results aren't amazing in either of our web browsing tests, but the Moto G moves up from the bottom of the chart to the middle, with performance on LTE networks slightly better (compared to other handsets) than on Wi-Fi. The Moto G 2015 records better battery performance than its predecessor across the board. Paired with a marginally more energy efficient SoC, and the new Moto G should last a lot longer than the previous model. This feature was first seen in the Moto X, so it's great to see it transition to Motorola's entry-level device.Īs for battery life, the third-gen Moto G comes with a 9.39 Wh, 2,470 mAh internal battery, larger than the battery in both the Wi-Fi and 4G models of the 2014 Moto G. Tapping on the display reveals further information, and pulling up will take you to the associated app. Whenever you pull your phone out of your pocket, or pick it up from a flat surface, the Moto G will display the time and any unread notifications. The final feature, and perhaps the most useful, is Moto Display, which shows notifications on your display even when the phone is off. One of the other features of the Moto app is Moto Actions: essentially gestures for turning on the flashlight (double chopping the handset) and quick camera capture (twisting the phone twice). Unfortunately you don't get to set your own triggers and actions, but you can use Moto Assist to silence your phone overnight or during meetings, which can come in handy. Moto Assist allows you to change the Moto G's settings based on certain conditions, such as time and location. The functionality in this app is limited on the Moto G compared to Motorola's high-end smartphones, but there are still some useful things to be found. The one main addition to the software stack included with the Moto G is the Moto app. If you want to read more about stock Android, check out our previous coverage of the operating system. The launcher, lock screen, notification pane, settings and stock apps will all be very familiar to people who've used stock Android before. The Moto G 2015 comes pre-loaded with Android 5.1.1 in a nearly stock configuration.
