The Covenant declares that species may never interfere in the religion, politics, or inner-species quarrel of the other two. Upon rumors, they then threaten repercussions to Matthew and Diana as they traipse the boundaries of the Covenant, an age old promise that all creatures are bound by. The Congregation- a council of nine supernaturals, three from each of the three creature species, question Matthew's intentions for taking the witch to the French familiar home. After Diana experiences a series of threats in Oxford which puts her in danger, along with bursts of unrealized powers she was supposed to have no aptitude for, Matthew takes her to Sept-Tours, his mother's home in France. Diana starts to develop feelings for Matthew. They begin to spend more time together discussing the mysterious volume's cultural value, what she saw, reasoning and content of the missing pages, the previously unknown bewitched writing hidden on the pages, and the expectation that the lost manuscript will explain the origins of the creatures. Matthew intervenes and prevents the other creatures from threatening and bothering her. Soon the secrets from Diana's past and her encounter with the Ashmolean manuscript begin to affect her daily life. He is shocked to learn that Diana has no idea why there is so much interest surrounding her and how she is seemingly uninterested and undereducted in any real history or abilities of herself and other creatures. Diana initially believes that he is responsible for the startling number of new creatures that have been stalking her since the encounter with Ashmole 782 and there is a confrontation. Quickly though, they both feel an undeniable energy which leads to respect.Īs a part of his natural vampire's instinct, Matthew feels the urge and need to protect Diana. He questions his belief in the trust of what the witch says and her true intentions since witches are alleged liars and manipulators. Matthew himself is a victim of the same teachings of discrimination and stereotypes. However long-standing false or manipulated stories and historical inaccuracies passed from generation to generation between the species, make Diana suspicious and nervous around the vampire. Matthew later sired two De Clermont vampire sons, Marcus and Benjamin.Īfter hearing rumours that a witch had called out a bewitched manuscript called Ashmole 782, long believed lost, Matthew Clairmont watches the suspected and mysterious witch named Diana Bishop in the Bodleian Library at Oxford University, He introduces himself to her and is unexpectedly immediately captivated. He learned to control his hunger from his step-father. His devotion to them and the new life they provided lead him to quickly become a strong, wrathful hunter. It was at this time that Matthew took the surname De Clermont, aligning with his new parents. Matthew agreed and Ysabeau made him a vampire, becoming his new step-mother and sire, with Philippe as his step-father. She offered him a life that allowed him to atone for his sin through service, and never face his coming damnation. While awaiting his impending death, Ysabeau de Clermont, the young wife of Philippe de Clermont, offered Matthew an alternative ending to his presumed afterlife in hell, as the traditional Catholic belief is that committing suicide destines you for Hell. Eventually, on what would have been Lucas' birthday, his grief became too much to bear and, in a moment of weakness, he jumped off the scaffold of the same church he had just built in his son's memory. Though Matthew was devastated, he continued to work on the building of a local church in memory of Lucas. Matthew's wife and son did not survive the wave. As he recalls, in 536 a fever came to the village where his family called home. Diana eventually learns the truth of the story through Matthew's retelling of the events in the second novel. As a catholic the events are in direct conflict of the church and could cause controversy, since he was a trusted and pledged defender of the church in the decades that followed. After struggling for many years, she gave birth to a son named Lucas.ĭespite being one of the older vampires, most don't know the actual facts behind Matthew's death and rebirth. They were married when he was twenty-five, and she was nineteen. He was a devout Roman Catholic when he met and fell in love with a woman named Blanca. He later apprenticed and transitioned into becoming a stonemason. In his mortal life, like his biological father, Matthew was first a carpenter. Matthew Clairmont was born in France around 500 AD.
